Gender Troubles: Helping My Nephew Realize Himself

Understanding the causes of gender confusion helped me come to terms with my nephew’s struggles, both internal and external, and taught me that the world is wide enough for everyone.

There was never any confusion about who I was when I was growing up—then, again, there wasn’t really a mainstream discussion about that kind of stuff, even though there was a rich discourse within academia and places outside the established norms. As a cisgender female, it was something that I took for granted. However, as I’ve grown older and become more aware of the struggles faced by people who do not necessarily conform to their assigned gender at birth, I’ve come to realize just how important it is that society as a whole learns to affirm and support individuals in their gender identity.

Affirming someone’s gender identity is simply a matter of respect and basic human decency. Everyone deserves to be seen and treated as the gender they identify with, regardless of what their body may look like or what others may assume about them. When we affirm someone’s gender identity, we show them that we see them for who they are and that we value and respect their identity.

When we recognize and respect the sheer diversity of gender identities, we help break down harmful stereotypes and biases our culture has long perpetuated and passively preserved. By creating a world where gender is simply a matter of self-identity and isn’t tied to anything we have deemed essential, a more equitable and inclusive society is much more plausible.

Gender Troubles

While I may not have much trouble with myself, I do have a nephew who does. He was born biologically a girl, but he never really aligned with that label. Where most girls went for Barbie dolls and tea sets, he was more enthusiastic about trucks and robots. Now, you may think that maybe he was just a tomboy—but he didn’t want to be a tomboy. He wanted to be a boy.

Understanding the causes of gender confusion and how they can affect the individual has been how I came to know more about my nephew. I love him, and I want him to be happy. And I couldn’t in any good conscience dismiss how he was hurting just because I didn’t understand anything.

So, understand I did.

What we sometimes call gender confusion is known in medicine as gender dysphoria. This is what happens when an individual experiences discomfort or distress because they cannot reconcile their gender identity with what has been assigned to them after birth. This is because society has to arbitrarily decide what your gender is when you are born.

The effects of gender dysphoria can manifest in a variety of ways. The most common is feeling like you were born in the wrong body or that your body was disgusting. This was what my nephew felt, and it was especially the case when he got his first period.

Other symptoms include being uncomfortable with the way people engage with you and an internal disagreement with following the norms of your assigned gender.

For young children, this can be complicated to navigate; it’s also complicated for adults, too (more so when sexuality gets thrown into the mix). This is because as the child grows, they are continuously developing their sense of self and understanding of the world around them. When they experience something as complex as gender dysphoria, it can be confusing and overwhelming.

Helping My Nephew Realize Himself

If a child is suffering from gender dysphoria, it is important that we listen to their concerns and their ideas about their identity and their place in the world. Their feelings and experiences should always be validated. This is not the same as justifying them, only that it is critical to let them know that they are being heard. It can be so easy to dismiss or minimize their feelings, but that is incredibly damaging. If I was callous enough to have denied my nephew his epiphanies, I don’t know if I would have ever seen his smile again.

As adults and members of society, it is imperative that we create a safe and supportive environment for all children, not just those with gender confusion. We should always engage with children at their level and consider their concerns seriously without prejudice and bias.

Confusion about one’s identity and one’s place in the world is a natural part of being human—and it’s important to assure children struggling that they are not alone and that they have your support.

While I can never understand everything about what he is going through, I would never leave my nephew alone, and I would never tell him that he is being delusional or anything. If he is happy being what he is, then who am I to deny him that?

How to Identify Plant Fossils Like a Geologist

Learning how to identify plant fossils is very important because it lets us look into our planet’s past.

Thomas McLoughlin, author of the book A GUIDE TO PENNSYLVANIAN (CARBONIFEROUS) AGE PLANT FOSSILS OF SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA, is a Pennsylvanian book about fossil plants. Mr. McLoughlin talks about the prehistoric fossilized plants buried beneath Earth. The book has a plethora of information that can’t be neglected.

With that said, let’s go ahead and find out how we can identify plant fossils as geologists do. Today, we’ll learn about the different fossil plant species, the best way to identify the fossil species, and more.

The Different Fossil Plant Species

Major climatic indicators include plants. Scientists can analyze the prehistoric temperature of Fossil Lake by using fossilized leaves and plants as prehistoric thermometers. Fossil leaf samples obtained from the Fossil Butte Member (FBM) are challenging to classify at the species level.

1. Soapberry (Deviacer wolfei)

This plant species belongs to the order Sapindales, family Sapindaceae. Some of the living members of this family are:

• Modern species consist of the tropical maple tree and lychee tree
• Present from temperate to tropical areas
• Includes more than 1,800 modern species

2. Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus confucii)

This plant species belongs to the order Sapindales, family Simaroubaceae. Simaroubaceae family has roughly 100 contemporary species, primarily found in tropical and subtropical areas. A few extant species exist in the Ailanthus genus, possibly five to ten. What they’re commonly called are the “Trees of Heaven.”

Ailanthus confucii is:

• found primarily in sediments found in lakes and ponds
• defined by the seed at the center
• a winged fruit
• from fossilized remains found in Europe, North America, and Asia

Ailanthus confucii samples found in the FBM are the earliest known representation from the Simaroubaceae family located in North America, probably worldwide.

3. Gyrocarpus Species

Gyrocarpus specimens show how difficult it is to recognize different species of ancient plants. This species yields:

• 3 lobed specimens
• non-lobed specimens
• 2 lobed specimens

The leaves of the same type of tree can have various appearances.

How to Identify Plant Fossils in the Best Way

The degree of preservation determines a great deal of the capacity to identify fossils. When it comes to leaves, describing the characteristics of the leaves is the best method to determine the species. Looking at lobation, venation pattern, shape, leaf attachment, type of margin, and leaf attachment.

Measuring the leaf’s length from base to apex determines the variety of leaf forms. These measurements can be divided into four main shapes:

• Obovate (the leaf’s widest section is near its apex)
• Elliptic (the leaf’s widest section is at the center)
• Ovate (the leaf’s widest section is found near its base)
• Oblong (the opposite margins near the center of the leaf run parallel and have the same width)

Thomas McLoughlin’s Pennsylvanian book about fossil plants can help if you need more details. It offers an in-depth look at the various fossil plant species he has unearthed. All of them are from the Carboniferous age, which is helpful for those who wish to learn how to identify plant fossils.

Why is Learning How to Identify Plant Fossils Important?

Learning about the evolution of the Earth’s climate is one of the goals of studying ancient plants. For instance, leaves may be used to calculate climate factors like annual rainfall and mean temperature. After knowing all this, we may compare the fossilized plants and megafauna from the same location.

We can also discover how the plant fossils and climate interact with one another. Like comprehending the seasonal migration patterns of the megafauna, which are visible in the fossilized plant remains. By focusing solely on the megafauna, we can only learn a relatively small amount about the planet’s past.

Examining the fossil plant helps us gain a broader perspective. Plus, we can piece together and fully comprehend the paleo-ecology that defined the old world if we connect the evidence.

Time to Fully Grasp the Bigger Picture of Our Past

Now that you know how to identify plant fossils, it’s time for you to fully grasp the bigger picture of our past. Thomas McLoughlin is here to provide a reliable source of information with his Pennsylvanian book about fossil plants.

How to Tell a Bully Off: Standing Up Against Bullying

A child needs to learn how to tell a bully off because being bullied is something no kid should ever go through, yet our society has failed us on that part.

Caroleann Rice, author of “The Ladybug and The Bully Frog,” offers a fun way for children to learn how to stop bullying in real life. Milton the Frog is a bully, and with him being rude to everybody, no one can play in the pond. Clover the Rabbit shares this problem with Mrs. Ladybug, “Dot,” and she decides to go to Solomon the Snail to ask for help.

Bullies are very unpleasant people, just like how Milton the Frog was. But there are ways that kids could stand up against bullies like Milton the Frog, and today, we’ll be looking at some of these methods.

Completely Ignoring the Bully

Believe it or not, most bullies are waiting for the ones they’re bullying to react. They love getting reactions from other people, especially if it’s about something that they do. And the specific response they’re looking for ranges from crying, getting angry, or getting embarrassed.

If a child feels that their emotions are rising and that they have emotionally reacted to bullying before, it typically continues and might escalate quickly. With that said, we must teach our kids to ignore the bully. Walking with confidence and their head held high even when being name-called will probably make the bully stop.

Once the bully understands that they won’t be getting a response from the child they’re targetting, they’ll most likely lose interest.

Vocalizing That They Want the Bully to Stop

There’s a high probability that if a kid fails to speak up against the bully while being bullied, the bullying will indefinitely continue. See, bullies don’t often expect someone to stand up to them. They even pick out the most vulnerable kids because they know it’ll be easy for them to intimidate their target.

Learning how to tell a bully off is very helpful, and a simple yet confident and strong voice saying “STOP!” can be highly effective. In Caroleann Rice’s book “The Ladybug and The Bully Frog,” they did something similar to make Milton the Frog stop. Being confident and standing up for yourself against bullies often catches them off-guard, and once they know that you won’t allow yourself to be pushed around, they’ll likely stop.

However, there is a caveat because saying something aggressive or mean could worsen the situation. It’s best for the child to respond in a way that de-escalates the situation.

Make a Lighthearted Joke About the Situation

Other kids have this natural ability to be funny. They can easily laugh with the bully and whatever they say. If a child can do this, it shows that they aren’t bothered by anyone pointing out (or fabricating) their alleged flaws.

When a child joins in the bully’s laughter, it undermines whatever control the bully may have believed to possess over your child and renders their bullying tactics ineffectual. But, an air of caution should still be taken when doing this because being rude or mean to the bully could end badly.

Steer Clear From the Spots Where Bullies Hang Out

Now, this may sound very simple, but it’s actually effective. Avoiding bullying hot spots is one of the best ways to dodge encounters with bullies. Their spots often include locker rooms, the playground’s corners, bathrooms, the back of the bus, and vacant hallways.

Switch your child’s routine up by picking them up from school, letting them walk home with their friends, teaching them to take the bus, or having them walk a different route on their way home. Parents should also ensure their child knows these spots and their location. This lessens the chance of them encountering bullies by a lot.

There Is Safety in Numbers, So Always Stick With Friends

Bullies typically seek out children who are socially or physically isolated. Make sure your youngster knows how beneficial it is to spend time with friends to avoid bullying. If your kid finds it hard to socialize, their social skills are a bit low, or they only have a handful of friends, help them develop friendships.

Learning How to Tell a Bully Off Can Work Wonders

Bullying may be easier to avoid for children if they are ready to respond to it. Emphasize that reporting bullying requires a lot of fortitude and bravery and is frequently the most effective strategy to end it.

Read to them the story of “The Ladybug and The Bully Frog,” by purchasing a copy of the book today and let your child understand the value of standing up for themselves.

Family Is More Than Blood: The Real Family We Choose to Have

Nowadays, people realize that family is more than blood and that none of us have to be blood-related to call each other “family” and form strong bonds with other people.

Diane H. Lane, author of the book I Loved Her Enough, understands how helpful it is to find your own family, as you choose them, and they choose you. In her story of familial love with a touching ending, Diane shows that familial love transcends blood and surnames because familial love goes above and beyond for the people involved.

With that in mind, let’s examine why family is more than just the typical blood relationships we often see.

Family Isn’t Just About Blood — Family is About Love and Acceptance

Sometimes, family isn’t what or who you believe it is. In actuality, there are many more people and locations than blood relatives where you might locate your authentic, true family. You will be glad to call some of your relatives who will stick with you as you grow.

However, the people you drift apart from and have to leave behind are not your family members. They may have chosen to belong to someone else. Perhaps they decided to look for additional pursuits in life. Maybe they needed a proper understanding of what a family was.

But it doesn’t mean that your family should be smaller or nonexistent. As a person, you have the freedom to pick your family as well. So don’t be afraid to be yourself because you’ll eventually find people you can connect with and call family.

The Real Treasure Is the Friends We Made Along the Way

Arguably the best family you’ll ever know will be your pals. When you first meet, you instantly click, becoming close with no forced or prearranged connection. Simply put, you’ll find yourself sharing their laughter and tears, attending their weddings, and grasping their hands as they become lost.

You might even develop feelings for one of them. Friendships are life’s method of demonstrating to us that family occasionally consists of more than what we’ve been taught. Friendship is an excellent example of why family is more than blood.

When our relatives fail to help, our pals occasionally step in. Toxic relatives, absent mothers, and negligent fathers — it’s preferable for you not to have them. Don’t let the term “family” or your fear of losing what you may not have actually had in the first place deceive you.

A new family can and will be found for you. Your tribe is waiting for you there, and once you meet them, your story of familial love with a touching ending will finally be aired. By then, you’ll have a family beyond being blood relatives.

Having a Wife and Children: Raising Your Very Own Family

Then, there is the potential love interest. Using this, you’ll construct your very own house. And it’ll be a household built on love, trust, and respect. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t felt like a family member from the past because you now have people who love you and rely on you.

Suppose your past was troubled or joyous. When you find love, your future will be completely renewed. In any case, isn’t that how each family starts? Deciding to be together as a couple and then staying together through sickness and health.

Although blood is thicker than water, it is also heavier. You can travel to many more destinations by water and discover new horizons and other people. There is freedom and happiness in water that blood simply cannot offer.

The Concept of “Family Is More Than Blood” Isn’t Limited to People

And when all is said and done, you can still find a sense of belongingness in your home, even if you live alone. Perhaps your pet cat or dog is your family. Maybe that book club or art class you’ve been putting off can make you feel like you have a place you can call home. The possibility is simply limitless.

It could be that the solitude you discover is probably enough; perhaps there are times when you are sufficient for yourself. There are countless individuals and places in the world that may make you feel at home. And wherever, whatever, or whoever will make you feel right at home, that story of familial love with a touching ending you’ve been waiting for could finally happen.

We hope that you had fun reading this one. Go on and grab a copy of Diane H. Lane’s I Loved Her Enough today. Read some of our other blogs as well, like learning some effective ways to build a loving and healthy family!

Howling at the Moon: Thinking About Werewolves

Something About Them Wairs from Everett D. Wair Sr. creates a new spin on the myth of the werewolf, a cornerstone of culture and a reflection of the human psyche.

The story of Something About Them Wairs is centered around the community of Lancaster, California, where three men of the Wair family have just committed something terrible, and they want to keep it secret.

After, from an unknown source, a horrific beast begins to terrorize the city, and bodies begin to turn up in grizzly conditions.

What is the secret of the Wairs? Do they have to do anything with the terror in Lancaster?

Howling at the Moon

Legends that speak of the intermingling between man and beast harken back to our primal fears of the wilderness and of treachery. While we love to declare our supremacy over other animals, there is a profound awareness within our bones that, despite our claims of being an enlightened species and our many attempts to rein in our worst impulses, our animal instincts are only a day away from regaining control. Civility belies savagery, after all, as they say.

The idea of the werewolf, or the man-wolf, is a more ancient concept than that of the bloodsucking, undead vampire. Werewolves and similar creatures are some of the earliest creatures of the night that we dreamt up. This is because, instinctively, we are more aware and afraid of the living beast than the entombed dead.

While variations of the werewolf myth exist in almost all cultures, the one thing that unifies them all is the belief that these creatures have the ability to either transform into a vicious wolf or an amalgamation of both man and the beast. Regardless, almost all ideas of the werewolf paint them as bloodthirsty entities that are more beast than man and who have trouble keeping their feral urges in check, which usually lead them to massacre people and animals alike, simply to satiate their bloodthirst.

Some historians mark the first werewolf as being found in The Epic of Gilgamesh, one of the oldest literary works in the world. In the epic, there is mention of a potential lover of Gilgamesh who turned a previous partner into a wolf.

Werewolves are also present in Greek mythology. In The Legend of Lycaon, the eponymous character, the son of Pelasgus, angered the chief Olympian Zeus by feeding him a boy who had been sacrificed. For this transgression against a deity, Lycaon was turned into a wolf alongside his sons.

There are also werewolves in Nordic myths. The Saga of the Volsungs has a story where a father and son became wolves after wearing wolf pelts. They then massacred a whole forest, which ended only when the father fatally wounded his son.

Thinking About Werewolves

Exploring the depths of my psyche in relation to humanity, I begin to look within myself. The werewolf holds a very special place in the human imagination. These mythical beasts have fascinated and terrified everyone equally for centuries. They have stirred the human imagination through their mystery, ferocity, and ambiguity. What is a werewolf? What desires does it hold? If it speaks, will it claim itself as more man or more beast?

Why do we find ourselves drawn to these monstrous beings? What does our fascination say about us? It is hard to tell, but I will try.

One idea that floats in my head is that werewolves are representations of our primal fear of the darkness and the unknown. As creatures who revel in the night and, in many myths about them, only transform during the waning hours, werewolves are strongly associated with darkness and the mystery that tends to be hidden within the shadows. Perhaps this is why myths of the werewolf always inspired unease and trepidation among the people who spoke of them.

Another thing that werewolves have going for them is that they embody the clearest expression of innate human savagery that society and civilization attempt to temper out of humans. It is not scandalous to say that there are plenty of people out there who, if given the opportunity, would break free from the restrictions set by cultural norms and law, embracing their animal instincts and acting as nature intended. Transforming oneself into a powerful and savage beast is a thrilling thought because it offers the ultimate sense of liberation and autonomy, which is incredibly intoxicating, especially in this world that values conformity and obedience. Werewolves offer us a tantalizing glimpse into a world that is wild, unbridled, and untamed—a reality that harkens back to a feral past.

Overcoming a Broken Heart: Getting Over a Heartbreak

There comes a time in our lives when we experience heartbreaks after the end of a romantic relationship, and overcoming a broken heart is not an easy journey.

Author Melissa Rea wrote a book titled Pool of Tears Nights of Alice 2, wherein her main character, Alice Hightower, has to recover from life-threatening injuries and a broken heart. Other challenges also pop up, which Alice would have to juggle to restore her company’s notoriety and his position as CEO.

Since you give love—and experiencing love is one of the nicest feelings in the world—heartbreak and pain can occur. Nobody enters a relationship expecting to be heartbroken. But you can’t predict what the future will bring.

With that in mind, let’s examine how people can start healing from the heartache of a broken heart.

Pool of Tears Tells Us That Acceptance Must Come First

In Pool of Tears Nights of Alice 2, Melissa Rea tells her readers that acceptance must come first. Alice Hightower was only able to face her issues and challenges once she accepted the things she had done. Instead of swimming in a pool filled with her tears, similar to Alice from Alice in Wonderland, Alice Hightower must overcome her pains.

Acceptance, or accepting things as they are, is the first step in moving past a breakup. Recognize that your love-related relationship is over, and that it’s time to move forward. Hearing this can sound brutal, but you should stop fantasizing about the notion that getting back together is plausible.

Stop entertaining the idea that what you and your partner are going through is just a phase. Don’t convince yourself it’s simply a temporary break, especially if they’ve clarified that the relationship is over.

Moving forward will be impossible if you hold onto the hope of reconciling with your partner. Accept the circumstance if you believe you did your share and your best to repair the relationship. It won’t be easy at first, but acceptance will become easier as time goes on.

Forgive and Let Go of the Past

Try to be forgiving as you progressively come to terms with the breakup. Be the better person and strive to forgive, even if you were left with your hopes up, only to find they weren’t being serious or cheated on. Overcoming a broken heart isn’t easy, as is forgiving, but you must do it.

Forgive yourself if you are to blame for your relationship’s breakup. The weight vanishes the moment you learn to forgive. You might never forget that time in your life, but forgiving someone will at least relieve you from any pent-up resentment, hatred, or guilt.

This is also one of the reasons not to rush into a relationship. If you still haven’t forgiven your ex or yourself, that could indicate that you genuinely haven’t moved on yet.

Always Look at the Bright Side of Things

Maintaining optimism even after experiencing heartache is possible. Every event, so the saying goes, has a purpose. Start to wonder if your ex isn’t the right person for you and whether still seeing your ex would prevent you from finding a better partner.

Develop the mindset that good things are about to happen in your life. After the breakup, start by being gentle to yourself.

Don’t Run From the Pain — Face It

Avoiding suffering is the most detrimental thing you may do after a breakup. Suppression is blocking or avoiding heartache as a defensive strategy is damaging.

Face your suffering, cry, or express it. Do not conceal your emotions. You’ll recover from the heartbreak faster if you allow yourself to grieve as much as you’d want.

People cry frequently, and that’s normal. It does not indicate weakness. Moving forward is a brave decision.

Take it Slow and Heal From the Pain a Day at a Time

Take time to recover one day at a time since, according to relationship experts, all wounds eventually mend. Healing is a complex procedure. We know it might not feel like things are returning to normal.

But if you give yourself time to recover each day, eventually, everything will be OK. Other individuals could heal faster, while some folks will take longer. Don’t rush yourself because healing is not a race.

Time will eventually heal your wounds, so don’t worry about deadlines.

Now is the Time to Start Overcoming a Broken Heart

We encourage you to start overcoming a broken heart today. If you’re looking for a story about recovering from heartbreak and bad experiences, Pool of Tears Nights of Alice 2 is a good book.

Remember to keep the methods to fix a broken heart we discussed today, and let your heart fully heal so you can love again.

Benefits of Painting Our Bodies and Minds Enjoy

Believe it or not, the benefits of painting can help keep our minds and bodies sharp, aiding us in becoming healthy individuals.

Jeanne Henderson, DBA October Sun Studios, Ltd., understands how beneficial to one’s health painting can be. In every painting she makes, she hopes it makes people smile and improve their day. She’s also an author, and her book “Madonna of the Ways” merges her passion (art and religion) to support everyone.

A novel, enjoyable pastime like painting can help you stay mentally sharp and positively affect your health. We’ve compiled some fantastic advantages of painting that aid mental health and raise the general quality of life.

1. Painting Help Develop Motor and Problem-Solving Skills

Many might be shocked that painting also fosters critical thinking, as experts believe it enhances creative abilities. To paint various solutions to many questions, an artist needs to conceptually think about what they’re painting.

What the artist intends before starting a painting may turn out differently due to color limitations or unintended effects during the artistic implementation. This explains why significant changes happen during the painting process.

The creative vision develops throughout the painting, helping to build crucial problem-solving skills. For a painter, thinking outside the box or creatively coming up with concepts comes naturally.

A person’s motor abilities also advance when they take up painting as a pastime. The fingertips and hands become more mobile when using a paintbrush deftly. A painter’s fine motor skills eventually become mental shortcuts that the mind utilizes daily.

2. Painting Nourishes a Person’s Emotional Growth

One of the benefits of painting is that it is an outlet for the artist’s feelings. Individuals are encouraged to examine their emotional states and analyze any emotions they might be unaware of. Many people of all ages find catharsis in expressing their feelings via art.

The art of painting causes people to become more emotionally intelligent as a direct result of the many advantages that painting has. Allowing your feelings to surface while painting can help you comprehend how you feel inside. It also helps identify why your fluctuating moods and stress levels are so high.

Jeanne Henderson understands how cathartic painting can be. She mentions that she uses her life as an inspiration. Her imaginations, journeys, and emotions are what fuel her paintings. Jeanne’s work has a particular pull, magnetizing audiences to her pieces.

3. Painting Lets Creativity Grow in Spades

When they are younger, individuals often categorize themselves as either right-brained or left-brained, and they then determine that this is who they are until they pass away. Folks with artistic, right-brained propensities find painting much easier to do.

However, this does not entail left-brained folks cannot benefit from painting. Anyone can take up a pastime, such as painting, because it’s not exclusive to artists. It’s possible for paintings to also encourage and support the creative evolution of left-brain individuals who are more analytical.

Left-brained people naturally possess two traits: practice and focus, which enable them to master artistic abilities at their speed.

4. Painting Fosters a Positive Attitude

Were you aware that painting beautiful things inspires a more positive outlook? Painters start by constituting their objectives to enhance their painting skills and acquire more knowledge and experience. Interestingly, an individual experiences a fantastic emotional response once they advance to a higher skill grade.

The advancement of a painter’s skills over time prevents destructive emotions and gives the individual pleasure and happiness. Folks who paint feel better about themselves and are motivated to improve their abilities. Additionally, the painting process creates a tranquil, open atmosphere that encourages artistic experimentation.

A feeling of accomplishment is produced due to developing and improving artistic abilities. Painters feel proud and content with their work when they create aesthetically pleasing pieces and are admired by others.

Paint to Your Heart’s Content and Reap the Benefits

The cognitive benefits to general health are greater than the potential of moderate physical fitness advantages that painting offers. With all the assets this creative pursuit has in store for people, it is evident that painters of all ages have excellent mental health.

Learning and enjoying the painting process encourages happiness in the artist and those around them.

Always keep the benefits of painting in mind and discover the timelessness and beauty in paintings. If you want to start looking at some paintings, visit October Sun Studios, LTD., and check out Jeanne Henderson’s magnificent works!

All Square: Is Minimalist Architecture the Way to Go?

Photo by Dima Mukhin on Unsplash

Today’s society prides itself on its minimalist architecture, the pinnacle of simplicity and elegance. However, a growing number of studies point to how this decision might not be the perfect route.

Minimalism first emerged as a subtle means to offset what mainstream art has become.

Artists who started this movement favored simplicity, labeling it as the new cool and hip, compared to the dramatic style, which they thought had become stale. They went big on avoiding expression, highlighting a lack of biography and metaphors in their art styles. This birthed the creation of geometric works that deliberately renounced what was then conventional for everyone’s aesthetic taste.

But this was way back in the 1960s when people didn’t live by the less is more principle.

Although minimalism was its name, the style still embraced and elevated design. It incorporated various elements, only emphasizing the abstract and absence of the conventional usage of a focal muse. But over time, people’s definition of it evolved largely because of their desire to reflect it on lifestyle, home décor options, and architecture, paired with the heightened interest in the less is more principle. Instead of its original application of an abstract yet intricate route in art, minimalism became more of a movement following a simplistic way of living.

In terms of people’s lifestyles, there’s no denying the benefits of minimalistic living. It helps people appreciate the simplicity of life and find happiness in the simple things. A minimalistic lifestyle teaches people to live a more fulfilling life with fewer resources necessary.

Thus, less is more.

But can people claim the existence of this effect on architecture as well?

In the book Untold Architectural Black History of Tampa, Florida: My 36-Year Architectural Career in Tampa, readers see how different architectural design was back then. The book, celebrating author and architect Ronald Lee Harden’s hard work and contribution to black communities, highlights the projects the latter handled for 36 years.

Although these establishments were erected decades ago, one may claim how much more complex their designs are compared to architecture now. Without the context of minimalism, people might argue that there is a backward trajectory regarding design.

From the dynamic and elaborate details to the facile and oversimplified architectural styles now, society faces a reverse movement with how people handle architecture.

One would’ve expected that as technology progresses into a system built to handle more complex responsibilities, this would reflect on the construction and its influence on society. Devices have become more “high-tech.” Cars now run faster while carrying slicker and more advanced designs.

So, why don’t these apply to architecture?

Architecture’s complex and intricate nature has recently been swapped with safe-to-say, bland designs. Classic and vintage houses were donned with detailed patterns and compositions. But modern buildings are stripped of this elegance and are, instead, exchanged with a plain and under-embellished design people would label as “chic.”

Most would marvel at such blank canvases, but others will likely call these dull and lazy. It’s like looking at a blank piece of paper and marveling at its unadorned front. Modern architectural design can safely be labeled as progressing backward because of its “disrespect” to people’s desire for intrigue. They’re becoming too plain, and simple people walk past them without a second glance of appreciation.

In fact, research about this matter was conducted back in 2012. The study tested whether the architectural design influenced the pedestrian’s psychological state, and the results were astonishing and slightly predictable. When exposed to a more designed establishment, people reported feeling more engaged and lively. With their physiological levels stirred up, they defined the locations to correlate with words like lively, socializing, and busy. On the other hand, when exposed to the “blanker” façade, people were observed to have doubled their steps, walking quicker than the other.

This behavioral effect toward simpler designs isn’t something foreign. Logically, it’s obvious that people would likely bear down, walk past monotony, and marvel at an opposite setting. This behavioral pattern reflects what psychologists would contribute to humans’ need for experimental aesthetics. When exposed to two ends of a design spectrum, people will likely find an “overdesigned” building more intriguing and interesting than the contrary.

This brings us back to the discussion of whether minimalism works in today’s architecture.

Sure, some would find simplistic designs elegant and chic. However, when it comes to people’s interest in intrigue, they would prefer the more detailed, complex, and perhaps, historical route of architecture. These designs bring a unique look to every city without buildings looking uniformly.

Compared to if society prioritizes the minimalist approach, historical preferences can highlight the artistic touches and uniqueness of the times before. Hence, instead of walking forward and building more modern establishments catering to minimalism, perhaps, it’s time to preserve historic buildings.

By doing so, people might learn to appreciate a new perspective in life compared to how monotonous and passionless it is.

Early Bird Special: Why You Should Invest as Soon as You Can

Learning to start investing for the right reasons and knowing when to invest as soon as you can is a critical step to attaining financial freedom and stability.

The Moses of Wall Street may sound like a corny title for a book about investing, but it truly taught me why I should be investing for the right reasons. The book is replete with brilliant advice and tips, especially the vaunted Triple Tank System, for investing properly—all with the wisdom and experience of a seasoned investor, one that fully acknowledges that his success is the result of a lifetime of learning and a devotion to God

Why Should Young People Invest Early?

There are plenty of reasons why you should invest as soon as you can, but the most critical factor is perhaps learning that investing is a lot like eating at a buffet. It’s the early bird that gets the worm.

If we were to go back in time, anything that surrounded investing would always be met with the idea of old men in fancy suits trying to make “deals” with one another, exchanging news on the stock market, and always with briefcases and a whole lot of reams of white paper, with numbers and charts and all of that.

If we had to talk about the investment market in the past, it would have been extremely odd to have young people involved. That was because they weren’t just interested and keen on the fact of putting away their money and keeping it for later. Especially when, at the time, the economy was booming, and everything seemed like it was only going on the up and up: paychecks were consistent and rewarding, technology was novel and interesting, etcetera, etc. For a lot of young folks in the 90s and onwards, the world seemed like an abundant oyster, and everything was simply waiting on the horizon.

Now, though, everyone, from old to young, knows the value of a good investment. It’s safe to say that we have entirely different views on investment before and now. I would say it’s the safest bet to say that. And that’s because the societal view on financial stability has matured compared to what it was before, especially with the advent of technology, which has only made it easier to follow up on market trends and bubbles.

We are simply now more aware of the importance of building long-term wealth—the recent global pandemic has only made it more significant.

Everyone has plans to invest now, and I definitely believe that no one is ever too young to put their money away for the future, regardless if you want to take on stocks or invest in startups.

Reasons You Should Invest as Soon as You Can

While the financial shares of most millennials and Zoomers haven’t reached their heights, they are in an ideal demographic to start investing now and yesterday.

Firstly, the longer you invest, the better your returns. This means that, while early investors will definitely get the best deal, young people, who still have their years ahead of them, are also in an equally valuable position to invest whenever. It is not an exaggeration to say that to the youth, time is their greatest asset.

Young people often have more time and resources to better research appropriate investment opportunities and a better understanding of current market trends. Remember, investing is a lot like growing a tree—the longer you work on it, the better the bounty will be when it comes time to start harvesting. So, why not begin now and enjoy the fruits of your investment at a later date?

Investing at a young age is also a good lesson in filing away the more pernicious impulses that youth are associated with, particularly their recklessness and frivolity when it comes to spending. By investing early and setting about expectations for future returns, you can learn the importance of being thrifty and resourceful with your current wealth.

Secondly, young people have the best opportunity to map out their future outcomes with early investments. The worst experience for an investor is always looking back on an investment opportunity they encountered when young and ignoring it because they were not knowledgeable enough about its importance.

Being a young individual also makes investing a lot safer and more secure since you are in a better position to bounce back from bad investments. You are also much more likely to recover quicker compared to your older peers. And if you score big and make a great early investment when young, think of the possibilities you will have when you’re older, with a spouse, children, and more obligations. If you’re smart about things, you could be creating a brilliant retirement plan in your twenties!

Art Theory Unravels Beyond the Definition of Art

There are many definitions regarding what art is and why people create art. This study is called art theory. Art is a visual representation, an action, a thought, a sound, or an arrangement of words. Art goes beyond being a mere outlet for our thoughts, emotions, intuitions, and desires. It is deeply personal, as it involves sharing our unique perception of the world, which is intertwined with our personalities. Art serves as a means of communicating profound ideas and experiences that cannot be effectively conveyed through words alone. Thus, we must seek alternative means to express our intentions. However, the true essence of art lies not in the content embedded within our chosen medium but in how we skillfully employ the medium itself and express the content within it.

Since the dawn of time, man has the urge to express himself. Cave paintings were considered one of the first works of art. There are many reasons why man creates art; some create art to express themselves, others create art to mimic nature, some make it to portray people, and some use art as therapy. An artist, by definition, is a person that creates a work of art. During the Renaissance, being an artist was the most noble profession; it was a time when art was greatly appreciated.

October Sun Studios

Vera Luagina Bonacci, also known as Jeanne Henderson, operates under October Sun Studios, Ltd. She acquired a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Kent State University, specializing in metals and fibers, particularly enameling. Additionally, she obtained a Master’s degree from Cleveland State University, focusing on curriculum and technology. Her diverse studies encompass fields such as Studio Arts, Creative Brain Theory, teaching through the Arts, Theater, Fashion (including retail, merchandising, and design), Jewelry design, and other artistic pursuits.

Vera has learned from accomplished visual artists, including Dino Massaroni, Judy Takacs, Paul Foropoulos, and others. While she initially delved into traditional portraiture, her current artistic endeavors aim to transcend realism and instead capture the dynamic energy, life, and vibrancy inherent in her subjects and themes. She hopes her works will resonate with viewers, drawing them into kinetic energy and evoking a personal connection within their souls. She intends to evoke emotions such as joy, curiosity, contemplation, and active engagement as individuals become immersed in the energy emanating from each artwork.

Furthermore, Jeanne Henderson is also an author who publishes under her name Tiefenbach-Henderson. She has written a book titled “Madonna of the Ways,” and an interview discussing the book can be found.

Art theories

During the Renaissance, philosophers studied art to understand why humans perform such an endeavor. Philosophers like Plato and Aristotle were the first to develop the first art theories. For Plato, to create art is to mimic nature to serve an educational purpose; he also believed that art should be beautiful to encourage moral growth.

Art as representation

One of the theories on why people create art is to provide representations. Before photography, the royal families commissioned artists to capture their portraits to preserve a record of their prime. Some artists paint still life to represent they live and mimic the objects around them. Artists who paint landscapes capture the moment of a beautiful place as if time stood still at a lovely time. With the invention of photography, artists challenged themselves to create something beyond photography, beyond representation.

Art as Expression

Nietzsche, a German philosopher, states that music is the highest form of art as it expresses real emotions through sounds. The music depicts the actual emotions which humans experience. In painting, an artist says his feeling through the stroke of his brush, the intensity or the temperature of his color palette, or the expression on the portrait of his subject. Art evokes certain emotions from its spectator or listener.

Art as Creation

Art is a product of creativity. Creating something original is difficult, especially when everything has already been made. If religion believes that god created the world in his complex design, art also believes in the creation of the unseen; art creates worlds and imagines possibilities beyond reality, making art transcendental. If given a sale price, a work of art is expensive because the artwork is beyond expression and representation. What makes an artwork original is the uniqueness of how a work of art is executed; it is original because, like the work of art, each person is unique and, therefore, original.

Art as Play

Art is more than a hobby or an expression. Art is life itself for artists, but to create art should come with immense passion and pleasure. An artist should enjoy painting to produce art like children playing with a hyperactive imagination. An artist plays with colors, mediums, and techniques to explore oneself and the world around him.
