Getting to Know B

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” – Pablo Picasso

Remember when you scribbled lines on your parent’s bedroom door using a sharpie? What about when you vandalized on the floor with the use of your mom’s newly bought lipstick? If you don’t, then what was your first memory of creating art? Think and reminisce.

I have always been in love with arts and crafts. Growing up with parents who always wants the best for their child, there were no restrictions if it is about my passion. There were no “you should be a doctor,” “what about you become the next president of the United States when you grow up,” or “be a pilot or get a profession in the aviation industry.” All there were was “do you need more pens and crayons?” and “that’s great, keep it up.” For that, I have always been thankful for my parents. I was not discouraged to do art nor persuaded to take the practical path. However, when life decided to roll the dice, my love for art started to fade away. It was almost like I being sick of it. I have to admit that I got jaded. I feel like a robot programmed to only draw and paint. That’s when I decided to stop doing what I love the most. It was hard because there was no plan B. I felt useless.

One day, I came across the movie “Dead Poets Society” and that was it. That was my glimmer of hope. It sparked the flame in me to do something close to art. The film inspired me to write. I can still recall the moment I began writing. I sharpened one of my pencils with broken tips, grabbed my journal, and started writing about my how I love my dog. The artist in me that I thought was dead began to awoken. However, it has new medium this time. Writing is a both a skill and a talent, which I can harness through time. It is not as complicated as painting. There are stroke to follow, no pace to keep up, and no color combination to worry about. This kind of self-expression is simpler. That’s why I’ve fallen deep into this trap and I’m no longer afraid of being caught up in a slump.

I still love creating art and craft but I am more in love with playing with words as of the moment. I feel more alive and human when I write. It gives me freedom and power to create different worlds, be a different person, and do impossible things.

“No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world.” – Dead Poets Society

I am Beatrice. Once an artist and now a writer. I hope that you would support and follow this page for more pieces about literature, art, craft, etc. Also, I wish that you can still find the artist that has lost in you and ignite the fire to create and inspire.
